The mission of Haskell Indian Nations University, a land grant institution, is to serve members of federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native nations as authorized by Congress and in partial fulfillment of treaty and trust obligations. With student learning as its focus, Haskell embraces the principles of sovereignty and self-determination through a culturally based holistic lifelong learning environment that promotes and upholds respect, rights, and responsibility.
This position is responsible for planning and administering the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, involving research, collection, exhibits, and public service functions. Exercises considerable latitude in the day-to-day execution of the job and keeps the President of the University informed of progress, potential controversies, or far-reaching implications. Work is reviewed for conformance to policies and effectiveness in meeting requirements.
Museum Administration: Plan and develop the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum. Identify and implement innovations and improvements to program operations to increase efficiency, improve public and customer relations and cut costs.
Collections Management: Conduct research to identify or authenticate historical objects. Catalogue all items in the collection, ensuring proper identification to include verification of historical record, and accuracy of documentation.
Exhibits: Plan, develop, renovate, and update new and existing exhibits. Adhere to museum standards and design to preserve artifacts and provide a stable environment.
Educational Programs: Develop, maintain, and arrange all educational publications and materials. Conduct presentations, lectures, and other outreach programs to educate the public about the museum and Haskell. Also responsible for teaching courses in Tribal Museum Management, Tribal Archive Studies and Records Management.
Public Relations: Establish and maintain liaison with local organizations, tourist agencies, tribal organizations, schools and educational organizations, various local and state groups. Prepares informative news releases, pamphlets, and booklets. Represents Haskell Cultural Center and Museum at various meetings and conferences.
Customer Relations: Handle inquiries and correspondence from internal and external groups and the public which are technical in nature.
