JOB DESCRIPTION
THE POSITION: A Fire Battalion Chief directs and coordinates the activities of an assigned fire suppression battalion or a major administrative support division within the Fire Department; provides staff support and assistance to the Fire Chief in managing the operations and administration of the Fire Department; interacts with the community as a senior fire representative on matters relating to the efficient delivery of City services; and performs other related duties as assigned. The Fire Battalion Chief may be rotated between shifts and between operations and staff assignments at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Experience: Seven years of full-time paid experience in a Fire Department, including at least four years as a Fire Captain or higher.
Education Requirement: A Bachelor’s degree in fire science, fire administration, public administration, or a related field; OR an AA/AS Degree, OR 60 transferable semester hours in association with a degree plan to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. As a condition of employment, candidates selected for Fire Battalion Chief and not in possession of a Bachelor’s degree will not progress beyond Step A of the classification salary range until the candidate obtains such a Bachelor’s degree as indicated above.

Licenses/Certifications: A valid California Driver’s License is required at time of appointment, and is required as a condition of continued employment. Must possess or obtain within eighteen (18) months of appointment the following State Fire Marshal certifications: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290), Intermediate Incident Command (I-300), Strike Team Leader, and Hazardous Materials Incident Command. A Chief Officer certificate is highly desirable.

2) A degree plan outlining degree major, accredited college or university from which degree will be attained, and remaining courses/units required to obtain the degree.
