Statement from Dr. Adrienne Laverdure/Clinical Director:
My name is Adrienne Laverdure, M.D., and I am a Family Practice physician who has been practicing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for almost nine years. I am a Native of North Dakota and an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. I attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and graduated from the University of North Dakota Medical School in 1994. My residency was completed through the Family Residency Program in Fargo, North Dakota.
After graduation, I planned to practice medicine in North Dakota however, shortly before graduation from residency I was contacted by the Lac du Flambeau Tribe, a rural reservation in northern Wisconsin. At that time, Lac du Flambeau was in great need of a physician. After a visit with Tribal leaders and Clinic Administration, I decided to move my family here.
To make a long story short, I am very happy with the decision I made. This is a great, safe place to raise children, and the outdoor activities are endless!!! Additionally, my patients are great people, and I truly enjoy my practice here.
I work at two different locations: one of the sites is Peter Christensen Health Center in Lac du Flambeau and the other is Ministry Medical Group in Woodruff, Wisconsin. At this point, we have three physicians in the group and are looking for at least two more Family Practice physicians. Currently, I am taking care of about 60 obstetrics patients between the two sites, so to recruit a Family Practice physician with OB would be ideal.
In Woodruff, we have a ninety bed hospital and a brand new OB ward. There are five Obstetricians who are available for consults. The hospital also has a fully staffed ER with Board Certified ER physicians. Since this is a big snowmobiling and boating area, we take care of a lot of trauma patients. There is another satellite clinic in Woodruff with every specialty except neurosurgery and cardiovascular surgery. The small town atmosphere and availability of specialists makes this a unique area to practice medicine.
In regards to call: it is usually 1 in 4 coverage. A busy night would be 2 admits in addition to five phone calls. Typically, the ER physician will write the admit orders, and if it is not an ICU patient, you can see the patient first thing in the morning. I usually use this rule…if it is before 10:00 p.m. I will go in to the hospital for the admit. A majority of our admits are chest pain and pneumonia.
With the rising cost of malpractice and managed medicine, it is nice to work in a place that is free of some of the stresses that other physicians may currently be experiencing. The Governor of Wisconsin recently passed a bill that has placed a cap on malpractice in our State. This definitely makes it more advantageous for physicians to be attracted to this area.
If this sounds like an opportunity that interests you, please call or email me with any questions.
