JOB DESCRIPTION:
FIREFIGHTER/EMT-PARAMEDIC
Summary: Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire and ambulance equipment, apparatus and facilities.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a Fire Captain.
Supervision Exercised: May assist to coordinate, instruct or supervise new recruits or other part-time department personnel as assigned.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus and operating pumps and related equipment.
2. Performs emergency medical care activities including administering emergency medical care and providing other assistance as required.
3. Participates in firefighting and ambulance related classes.
4. Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
5. Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
6. Maintains fire and ambulance equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment
7. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs,; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus equipment
8. May be required to carry a pager and be on call
9. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
10. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
11. Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
12. Performs work after hours on an as needed basis.
13. Is the employee on call for emergencies as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of driver safety; working knowledge of emergency medical care; ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment, ability to learn to apply standard firefighting emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques; ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke; ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees other agencies and the general public; ability to meet the special requirements listed below.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess, or be able to obtain at time of hire, a valid North Dakota driver license; current nationally registered EMT- P; current CPR and ACLS certification; current North Dakota EMT-P licensure.
Equipment Used in Job Performance: Emergency medical aid unit, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, phone.
