This position is located in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service with the incumbent serving as Optometric Technician for a large mulit-clinic ambulatory facility. It is the purpose of this position to provide technical duties in support of an optometry clinic which includes two optometrists. Manages the optical activities of the optometry clinic. Prepares prescriptions and orders glasses from optical manufacturers. Maintains all frames and keeps them current according to stipulations in optical fabrication contract. Performs complicated frame measurements necessary to assure correct cosmetic, physical and optical performance, e.g., mulit-focal lenses, special specification lenses. Performs dispensing duties. Works independently. Performs basic optical bench work. Verifies spectacle prescriptions through use of lensometer (manual or automatic), lens gauges and other instrumentation. Interviews patients and records health history and other appropriate findings. Assists the optometrist by doing visual acuity, color perception, heterophorias, depth perception, gross visual field testing, objective refraction, keratometry and intraocular pressure. Performs additional procedures at the request of the optometrist, e.g., visual fields, vision training, ect. Instills pharmacological agents into patient's eyes in preparation for oculat evaluation or therapy in accordance with optometrist's instructions. Provides and assists with one to one and group patient education relative to optical, ocular disease conditions and refractive problems. Assist in the coordination of eye care programs of the optometry clinic with the CHR, Social Services and other agencies and departments. Orders all supplies and tools. Ensures proper storage of pharmaceuticals, supplies, and instruments to comply with professional standards and regulations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-6: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
