HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
Summary: Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment and specialized machinery utilized in maintenance, repair and sanitary landfill operation.
Supervision Received: Director of Public Works/Engineering, Maintenance Superintendent, Water and Wastewater Foreman or Street and Sanitation Foreman
Supervision Exercised: None
Essential Job Functions:
1. Operates the following pieces of equipment: dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, sewer jetters, sewer and manhole vacuums, sand spreaders, motor patrols, street sweepers, cranes, bulldozers, scrapers, trash compactors, steamers, concrete saws, bucket truck w/ hydraulics, chain saw, tree chipper, tree stumper, air compressor, jackhammer, air driven compaction tools.
2. Operates a variety of other special and standard equipment as assigned.
3. Services equipment and makes field adjustments and repairs.
4. Levels and finishes asphalt and concrete.
5. Helps repair water pumping stations.
6. Maintain fire hydrants, valves, sewer and water mains.
7. Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned and occasionally exercises supervision over other operators and laborers.
8. Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours.
9. Performs related work as required.
10. The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion. The position residency shall be such that when the employee is notified of an emergency, the safe and prudent driving time to the public works facility shall be within 22 minutes of notification. If the employee is scheduled as part of the On-Call Roster, the employee driving time to the public works facility shall be within 12 minutes.
Peripheral Job Duties:
1. Open and close graves at cemetery.
2. Operate forklift and skid steer loaders.
3. Substitute for sanitation truck drivers, operating side load and rear load sanitation trucks and roll-off trucks.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of heavy motor equipment in general construction and maintenance activities. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations related to equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Skill in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment over rough, slippery, or unstable surfaces.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience: Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy motor driven equipment. Two years as Light Equipment Operator or Utility Operator.
OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirement: Valid North Dakota commercial driver license to be obtained within three months of hiring; insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.
Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.
