JOB DESCRIPTION:
LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

Summary: Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of light construction, snow removal and other specialized equipment with routine maintenance responsibilities for assigned equipment.

Supervision Received: Street and Sanitation Foreman

Supervision Exercised: None

Essential Job Functions:
1. Operates the following pieces of equipment: dump trucks, garbage trucks and packers, front-end loaders, air hammers, rollers, tampers, sign making and line painting equipment, tractors, mowers, street flushers, sewer jetters, sewer manhole vacuum machines, light backhoes, sand spreaders, trenchers, pumps, steamers, concrete saws.
2. Performs vehicle body repair and paints vehicle and equipment.
3. Performs required manual labor as crew member involved in construction and street maintenance projects.
4. Loads and unloads trucks, hauls snow and transports loads to predetermined disposal points.
5. Must be on call periodically on weekends or after hours.
6. Performs related work as required.
7. The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion. The position residency shall be such that when the employee is notified of an emergency, the safe and prudent driving time to the public works facility shall be within 22 minutes of notification. If the employee is scheduled as part of the On-Call Roster, the employee driving time to the public works facility shall be within 12 minutes. Those working in the position as a scale operator or having a full-time sanitation route will not be part of the On-Call Roster. However, they may be called for weekend duty because of holidays.

Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of city and state traffic laws. Working knowledge of common hazards and safety precautions necessary for light equipment operation. Skill in the operation of light equipment. Ability to work at arduous tasks for sustained periods of time in all types of weather conditions. Ability to perform minor preventive maintenance as required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: One year experience as a truck driver or operator of construction and maintenance equipment.
OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement: Valid North Dakota commercial driver license; insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.

Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions; in high, precarious places; on slippery surfaces; is exposed to risk of electrical shock and is subject to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud.
