JOB DESCRIPTION

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) has launched the Prevention Fellowship Summer Internship for Graduate Students in Tribes and Tribal Organizations.
The Summer Internship, a component of CSAP’s Prevention Fellowship Program, invites qualified graduate students from schools of public, behavioral, and allied health to apply for a 10-week paid summer internship program in participating Strategic Prevention Framework- Tribal Incentive Grant (SPF –TIG) locations and Tribal Organizations throughout the United States.

Summer interns are accepted on a location-by-location basis, depending on the sites of SPF–TIG locations and Tribal Organizations, as each SPF–TIG location is not participating in the Summer Internship program. Interns will receive a stipend of $15 per hour and will be required to work 40 hours per week from June 13, 2011, to August 19, 2011. They will not be provided with insurance, travel, lodging, per diem allowances, or conference registration reimbursement.

The SPF SIG initiative has built upon the State Incentive Grant (SIG) program, launched by CSAP in 1997, as one of SAMHSA’s Infrastructure Grant programs. This program was also included in the tribal community as the SPF TIG. These programs support an array of activities to help grantees build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective substance abuse and mental health services. In the case of SPF TIG/SIG, Tribal/State grantees receive funding to implement the framework in order to achieve the following goals: (1) prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance abuse, including childhood and underage drinking; (2) reduce substance abuse-related problems in communities; and (3) build prevention capacity and infrastructure at the state and community levels.

Purpose:
The Summer Internship will allow Graduate Student Interns the opportunity to receive front-line experience in the field of substance abuse prevention within the Strategic Prevention Framework- Tribal (State) Incentive Grant (SPF - TIG) Tribes and Tribal Organizations. The Summer Internship will focus on providing interns with Epidemiological and Evaluations training and hands on experience. The Summer Interns will learn new techniques, master best practices in the field, and apply knowledge gained from their graduate school experience and cultural experiences.

Training:
The Summer Internship requires interns to participate in Webinars to acquaint interns with general public health issues within the tribal community and best practices for Epidemiology and Evaluation in substance abuse prevention. The Native American Center for Excellence (NACE) will be partnering with the Summer Internship to host the webinar trainings.

Graduate students from any location seeking selection into the Summer Internship must meet the following criteria and provide associated documentation:
(1) U.S. citizenship or U.S. Territories and Pacific Jurisdictions residency;
(2) Enrollment in a graduate school for public, behavioral, or allied health;
(3) Two letters of recommendation from an academic and/or professional reference;
(4) A detailed essay or paper of no more than two pages on why the candidate should be selected for the internship, and how selection would support his or her career goals (to be completed through the online application); and
(5) A strong interest in the substance abuse prevention field.

*Preference will be given to Native American graduate students and those attending Tribal Colleges and Universities.

Applications will be accepted from eligible candidates beginning on Monday, April 4, 2011. To apply, complete and submit the online application no later than Monday, May 16, 2011. The online application is available at www.seiservices.com/SAMHSA/csap/preventionfellowship.

For additional information, please contact the Prevention Fellowship Program at (240) 485-1700, Ext. 122, or via e-mail at preventionfellowship@seiservices.com.

Selected candidates are expected to begin the Summer Internship on Monday, June 13, 2011. Applicants will be notified of their selection status on or before Wednesday, June 1, 2011.
