The Williston Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full-time Water Treatment Plant Operator I. The complete job description follows.

WATER PLANT OPERATOR I

Summary: Receives training in and performs semi-skilled work in the routine operation, servicing and minor maintenance of equipment in a water/wastewater plant.

Supervision Received: Water Production Superintendent; Water Plant Operator IV as assigned.

Supervision Exercised: None

Essential Job Functions:
1. Receives instruction and training in the operation of plant equipment to control the flow and maintain the proper levels of treatment.
2. Receives orientation and training in the performance of a variety of tasks, including the inspection and servicing of equipment and the monitoring of chemical feeders, motors, gauges and valves.
3. Operates filters, takes samples to determine that all treatment facilities are operating efficiently, and takes corrective steps where necessary.
4. Makes periodic rounds of the plant to check equipment operation and flow meters; maintains chemical feeder levels.
5. Records all meter readings, water analysis checks, water and chemical flow and all maintenance performed.
6. May assist technical superior in operation of sludge plant equipment.
7. Performs a variety of buildings and grounds maintenance as assigned; maintains grounds, including mowing and snow removal.
8. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Some knowledge of chemistry. Some knowledge of simple mathematics. Ability to learn the operation of motors, pumps, meters, electrical systems and related equipment in a water or wastewater plant. Ability to make accurate readings, keep records and make reports. Ability to take verbal and written instructions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: None OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement: Must have a valid North Dakota driver's license. Must be insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.

Equipment Used in Job Performance: Laboratory equipment, computer, telephone, shovel, broom, forklift, lawn mower, weed trimmer, snow blower, electric tools, hand tools.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk; hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, in high, precarious places and in confined spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
