JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, supervises law enforcement activities of Police Department staff on an assigned shift. This is treated as a FLSA non-exempt position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience equivalent to four years full time, professional level law enforcement work, which will include one year of experience as a Police Sergeant; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed below. Must possess Arizona POST certification as a Peace Officer. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (must have no DUI/DWI convictions within the last 3 years.) Must successfully pass an extensive background check to include a polygraph test, and medical and psychological exam.

The ideal candidate will have at least six years experience as a sworn law enforcement officer and/or professional law enforcement experience with a tribal government/organization.

Preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Within the scope of Indian Preference, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factors. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference, must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood at the time of application.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises patrol activities during an assigned shift, including assigning staff, reviewing reports, and riding patrol as necessary; reviews reports, complaints, affidavits, and other related documents prepared by subordinate officers.
Resolves day-to-day operational problems and questions arising from staff and the public. Provides operational support to the Office of the Chief of Police.
Performs the full range of duties of subordinate officers when necessary for the effective patrol operations.
Trains subordinate officers in various law enforcement policies, procedures, and techniques, to maintain/improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism of the Ak-Chin Indian Community Police Department.
Prepares records of shift activity and communicates shift information to supervisor of next shift.
Evaluates performance of assigned staff; prepares reports regarding activities/incidents for command staff review.
Collects/preserves and/or supervises collection and preservation of case evidence, including ensuring that less experienced staff follow appropriate investigative/chain of custody procedures and sending evidence to the State crime lab.
Performs a variety of case management oriented activities, including working with prosecutors, maintaining case files, and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of Ak-Chin Indian Community laws/ordinances to be enforced.
Knowledge of State, Federal, and County statutes, codes, and ordinances to be enforced.
Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, including investigation, identification, patrol, traffic control, community/public relations, records management, report preparation, and custody of persons and property.
Knowledge of the equipment used in law enforcement, including weaponry, communications, and automotive equipment.
Knowledge of the location of streets and addresses in Ak-Chin and the surrounding area.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision, including performance evaluation and progressive discipline.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other law enforcement agency and regulatory agency/organization staff, Community officials, criminal justice staff, and the public
Skill in understanding and interpreting complex statutes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
Skill in preparing reports documenting the facts and actions regarding criminal/civil incidents.
Skill in reviewing and evaluating the work of subordinate staff to ensure that established law enforcement operations standards are met.
Skill in using a variety of specialized law enforcement equipment.
Skill in communicating using a standard two-way radio.
Skill in conducting investigations of criminal activities.
