JOB DESCRIPTION

The Williston Police Department is accepting applications for a full-time police officer to tentatively begin duties January 1, 2011. Essential job functions include but are not limited to patrolling within the City of Williston to preserve the law and peace, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes, and to enforce traffic, criminal, and parking regulations, both Municipal and State.
Minimum qualifications for this position are passing a background investigation, a psychological exam, and a physical exam. Applicants must possess the ability to be firearm certified and must be North Dakota POST licensable. They must possess a current driver’s license and have the ability to learn applicable Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. They must have the ability to learn modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and use of equipment. They must have the ability to observe situations, record them, and react quickly and calmly. They must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

POLICE PATROL OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION:

Summary: Receives training in and performs routine professional law enforcement work.

Reports to: Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, Police Captain, Chief of Police

Essential Job Functions:
Receives training in a wide variety of police functions including criminal investigation, evidence collection, patrol and traffic procedures, self-defense, use of firearms, and police cruiser operation.
Patrols a designated area of the city on foot, on motorcycle, or in a radio-equipped patrol car to preserve law and peace and to prevent and discover the commission of crime; answer calls and complaints of crime, violence, thefts, accidents, domestic disputes, and other felonies and misdemeanors; locates and arrests offenders.
Enforces traffic and parking regulations; directs traffic; investigates accidents and obtains information from witnesses.
Prepares record of arrests and submits detailed reports of investigations made.
Attends training courses and instructional meetings.
Makes investigations of crime scenes and preserves evidence; identifies witnesses.
Assists supervisors in their work.
Investigates reports of child neglect and of persons reported to be contributing to the delinquency of minors; investigates reports of missing persons and vehicles.
Prepares evidence for issuance of complaints; serves criminal processes, including warrants and subpoenas; prepares reports of all activities.
Appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of offenses.
Performs related work as required. **


Peripheral Job Duties:
Answers calls and complaints of crimes of violence, thefts, accidents, domestic disputes, and other felonies and misdemeanors; locates and arrests offenders.

Minimum Qualifications: Must pass background investigation. Must pass psychological exam, physical exam, polygraph examination. Must possess ability to be firearm certified. Must be North Dakota P.O.S.T. licensable. Must possess current driver license. Working knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment. Working knowledge of Departmental rules and regulations, applicable laws and ordinances, and arrest procedures. Working knowledge of the principal buildings, streets and physical layout of the City and adjoining areas. Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of police vehicles. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow officers, other agencies and the public. Ability to meet necessary special requirement.

Necessary Special Requirement: Appropriate certification required.

Equipment Used in Job Performance: Patrol vehicle, personal computer and word processing software, weapons, pistol, shotgun, pepper spray, baton, two-way radio, pager, telephones - land line and cellular, calculator, copier and fax machine, library, North Dakota Century Code, City Ordinances.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, or operate objects, controls or tools listed above; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear well.
