JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Marketing Coordinator
Department: Public Education
Reports To: Public Education Director
FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Purpose

To coordinate, research where and how to implement, negotiate rates, implement and track results of the American Indian College Fund’s paid advertising, public relations, and marketing efforts to reach out to the American Indian College Fund’s audiences. The purpose of our advertising is resource development with donors, and we also seek to create awareness of our scholarships and programs amongst students, tribal colleges and tribes in Indian Country.

Job Context

Without public awareness, the Fund cannot effectively fundraise. Targeted, succinct marketing and public information campaigns tell our audiences the stories of our students and schools that we serve, and about our mission to serve them, while creating in them a desire to make a difference and share that mission as part of their personal mission.

Why are the values of the organization critical to how an incumbent in this position carries out the job?
The incumbent is responsible for selling these values to the general public, donors, and potential donors. Without believing in these values, it is difficult for the incumbent to educate the public about why they are important in effecting change in Indian Country through education.

Job Responsibilities

1. Coordinate advertising with the mainstream and tribal media, tribal colleges, and other programs.
a. Negotiate ad rates and place paid ads in publications to build awareness of scholarship opportunities with the Fund.
b. Develop relationships with tribal colleges to secure donated advertising on their web sites, radio and television stations, campus publications.
c. Develop relationships with mainstream media to negotiate and secure advertising in print, electronic, and web publications.
d. Develop relationships with tribes to negotiate and secure donated or inexpensive advertising in print, electronic, and web publications.
e. Work with college financial aid, registrars’, and student groups’ offices to distribute literature to students about scholarship opportunities.
f. Place ads online, including Google ads, coordinating with our donated Google Ad campaign to ensure that the ads for donations do not compete with viewing for ads for scholarships
g. Work with special events to develop marketing plans for paid and donated advertising and marketing opportunities for fundraising gala, regional fundraising events, and tribal college tours. This includes but is not limited to negotiating and placing donated and paid advertisements; negotiating and placing kiosk marketing advertising events; radio and television announcements and program interviews; event announcements in newspaper, community, and online calendars; and approaching arts and other publications to determine if they will donate ad space.
h. Maintain updated contact lists for advertising contacts and rates; tribal college contacts; tribal and Indian center contacts; and more.
i. Maintain updated media lists for mainstream, tribal college, tribal, and Native media.

2. Maintain databases of information showing marketing patterns and growth.
a. Social media
b. Web analytics
c. Links to advertising and web hits for scholarship applications.
d. Links to PSA advertising and donations (anecdotal)
e. Press release tracking charts and reports for Resource Development on PR Newswire


3. Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Competencies
• Microsoft Office, with outstanding Microsoft Excel skills, including developing charts, graphs, and other ways to display data in a compelling manner.
• Understanding and use of social media, advertising concepts.
• Project management experience with advertising, marketing, and printing industries.
• Experience negotiating rates and working with outside vendors.
• Attention to detail, project and people management, ability to manage track and manage several projects simultaneously.
• Interest in multiple cultures.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds.


Education / Experience / Certification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, or marketing.

Two years of experience in advertising or marketing with a publication or organization securing advertising and marketing space.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in advertising or marketing or related field.
• Knowledge of nonprofit environment and/or national Indian and education issues preferred.
• Design skills with Adobe CS

Independently solves standard problems; receives guidance on complex problems
